Currently, in order to understand different global phenomena and situations, more and more reference is made to the various data that are collected through Earth observation. Those data, which come from different sources, such as satellite information or sensors on Earth, are subsequently interpreted through complex models.

Observatory is working with CSIRO (Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) to develop a Chilean -and eventually- South American Data Cube. The Data Cube is a system for organizing, calibrating, correcting satellite data, monitoring and sensing, which delivers all the data in such a way that a researcher, public official or entrepreneur can concentrate on asking interesting questions and arrive quickly to the needed answers.

This infrastructure that is being developed by CSIRO and DO aims at promoting research in base areas, and applied research, for example, in the subject of climate change and innovation for the development of technology and services in various areas of the economy.
