The agreement is being carried out through CSIRO in collaboration with Data Observatory, the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, and AWS, and its purpose is to gather open satellite data and make them accessible on a new platform to be used by 34 international space agencies as members of Committee on Earth Observation Satellites.
“We are implementing the Data Observatory, a joint project between the Ministry of Sciences and Economy, for the process and distribution of large flows of astronomical data”, as stated by President Sebastián Piñera in the opening speech of the Future Congress 2021.
The participant teams developed solutions to measure, monitor and predict the effects that climate change has on glaciers, wetlands and forest fires located in the outskirts of the city, by using data and high-resolution satellite images that were provided by SAF and Open Data Cube. The competition included the enthusiastic participation of 47 teams made up of citizens, undergraduate and graduate students, academics and investigators.
Intended for undergraduate and graduate students, professors, researchers, and computer experts, the FACH Virtual Hackathon 2020 enrolment process will remain open from November 9th to November 27th, as an initiative by Data Observatory with the sponsorship of the Chilean Air Force Aerial Survey Facility (SAF).
Data Observatory (DO), in collaboration with the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics (MAS), and the Center for Mathematical Modelling (CMM), wants this project to position Chile as one of the world’s leading providers of the artificial intelligence layer for the processing of millions of astrophysical alerts per night, and to enable technology transfer in Data Science skills to other industrial and economic sectors.
In its first stage, a prototype of Open Data Cube (in Spanish Open Data Cube) will be developed, starting with satellite data from LANDSAT in Chile to advance research on issues such as water, drought, agriculture, red tide and urban development in different locations, having already available satellite data from the Metropolitan Region for the last 35 years.
